Saints of Paradox contains a mix of mediums including AR, illustration, and animation. Tavares’ PhD research explores how AR technology can expand narration in picture books.

When the illustrated printed pages are scanned, the user has the option of selecting one of 3 separate buttons, each activating a different narration. Each saint has a unique monologue, soundscape, video, and animated instructions that play out over the printed picture.

This artistic, practice-led thesis is concerned with the potentials of polyvocality and interactive digital narrative. All design and illustrations were created by artist and researcher Tatiana Tavares and the technology / AR component / app development by the team at CONICAL.
